The first step was the installation of a satellite dish at the GILLBT office which was done by the VSAT service provider. We also had to raise a 60 foot pole with the base station access point so that we could share our internet connection via wireless.
Barnabas (in yellow shirt) devised a system that gave the pole a solid foundation, but still allowed us to easily raise and lower it.
With the base of the pole secured, it was time to attach the Wireless Access Point (WAP) to the top.
Next, the network cable and grounding wire needed to be secured all the way down the pole.
It took at least seven men to raise the pole.
The pole at the GILLBT office had an omnidirectional antenna so once it was up, it was done. At the Literacy and Development through Partnership (LDP) office the antenna was directional and had to be pointed at the WAP at GILLBT which was 2km away and not visible.
Using Google Earth I was able to draw a line between the two offices. That was when I discovered that the line went directly through a group of the three tallest trees in the area. We had to increase the height of the pole by another twenty feet.
Between adjusting for height and direction we raised and lowered the pole at least fifteen times...no small task.
Once the pole was up, two more bolts needed to be put in while everybody held it straight.
Success!!!
A few days later a surge blew the protector on the network cable. Thankfully somebody was coming back from the US a week later and we were able to get a replacement. We also had to do some rethinking on the grounding wire as it appeared that a problematic appliance in the building sent the surge through the grounding wire.
